The Logic Behind Fast Multiplication
If you’ve ever stared at a multiplication problem like 97 × 96 and wished it would vanish, you’re not alone. Most of us were taught the traditional “write it down, multiply, carry, repeat” method. It works, but it eats time. And when you’re racing a clock, especially in exams or mental math challenges, you need something quicker and smarter.
That’s where Ekādhikena Pūrvena steps in. One sutra. One idea. A whole new way of multiplying numbers close to powers of 10.
And it gets even better. Students practicing this sutra inside the TRICEF Lingo course have been turning those “ugh” moments into “wait, that was fast!” moments.
What does “Ekādhikena” actually mean?
Ekādhikena Pūrvena roughly translates to:
“By one more than the previous.”
(Here, “previous” refers to the number on the left of the multiplier.)
So in a problem like 97 × 96:
- The “previous” number is 9 (from 96)
- One more than 9 = 10
This tiny step becomes the foundation for multiplying fast.
The core logic (explained like a lightbulb)
Ekādhikena is often used with numbers ending in 5 or numbers close to 10, 100, 1000, etc.
For example, with numbers ending in 5:
75 × 75
- Take the left part (7)
- Multiply 7 × (7 + 1) → 7 × 8 = 56
- Append 25 at the end → 5625
That’s it. No long steps. No stress.
Similarly, for numbers near 100:
97 × 96
- Both numbers are close to 100, so find their deficits:
97 → -3, 96 → -4 - Cross subtract: 97 – 4 = 93 or 96 – 3 = 93
- Multiply deficits: 3 × 4 = 12
- Combine: 9312
Quick, logical, satisfying.
How TRICEF Lingo builds these skills
Instead of teaching children to memorize, the TRICEF backed program through TRICEF Lingo Vedic Maths Level 1:
- Introduces sutras like Ekādhikena using patterns kids already understand
- Encourages mental computation before written steps
- Uses short practice bursts — great for attention and retention
- Helps students of mixed ability gain confidence at their own pace
- Includes plenty of real-time examples, micro drills, and feedback-based learning
Students often say the sutras feel less like “math rules” and more like “math tricks powered by logic.”
Benefits beyond speed
Learning Ekādhikena inside a Vedic Maths course isn’t just about fast answers.
It taps into:
- Better number sense
- Less dependency on calculators
- Stronger focus during problem-solving
- Fewer errors caused by messy intermediate steps
- More interest and curiosity toward mathematics
It rewires fear into fascination.
Are there any risks?
Yes, a small one “sutras need practice to become natural”.
If students treat them like “one-time magic,” they won’t get the full power. But when practiced in structured levels like in the TRICEF Lingo Vedic Maths course, the learning becomes steady and practical, not confusing.
The bigger picture
Vedic Maths sutras are ancient, but their impact is modern. In a world where time matters and thinking matters more, sutras like Ekādhikena give young learners an edge, the kind built on insight, not pressure.
Bringing this learning to the community
The TRICEF Lingo skilling initiative is now reaching students in and around Padappai through offline and guided learning sessions, helping children explore math differently and prepare better for academic goals.
Ready to try it yourself?
Here’s a fun starter:
- 85 × 85 = (8 × 9) → 72 → 7225
- 95 × 95 = (9 × 10) → 90 → 9025
- 98 × 97 = Deficits (2, 3) → Cross subtract 95 → 2×3=06 → 9506
You’re already doing it. Now imagine doing this faster with practice.
